Orléans’ annual Ribfest ‘meats’ a new partner this year
Orléans Rib and Poutine Festival on September 15, 2024.
Orléans’ annual Ribfest has kicked off September 13-15, but this year it’s not the only food people have their taste buds ready for.
In the past, Orléans’ Ribfest has been its own event, but this year it is being merged with Poutinefest. “Coming from the U.S. you don’t [see] this a lot. It’s a Canadian thing,” says Bilal Kurbaj, an employee of Big Bubba Lou’s Bar-B-Q.
With five different ribbers from Canada and the U.S., and over 50 different poutine flavors, there is something for everyone to enjoy. “It doesn’t take away business from anyone. If anything, it's beneficial for everyone,” Kurbaj adds.
With so many food options, each vendor sets themselves apart from each other. Poutine flavours range from classic gravy and cheese, to bacon double cheeseburger. On the other hand, ribbers make their ribs with their homemade sauces, meat and grilling expertise. There are also people from all cultures who grill the ribs, which contribute to making their ribs different from other vendors, Kurbaj shares.
“It is very exciting . . . Which way do you go?” says a first-time customer

Live music sets the tone of the festival as customers enjoy their meals. Bands from Ottawa perform soft-rock music and original songs. Families come together to experience the festival by trying new food and creating a lively atmosphere. “There’s fast service, people are very polite, and everyone is having a great time,” says customer Karen Kennedy.
The official rib cookoff competition is on September 15 at 11:00am. Each rib vendor will present a serving of their ribs that will be voted on. Customers can begin to rack up their votes starting September 16. The winner is yet to be announced.
For those who are not craving ribs or poutine, there are other snacks and drinks like beer, cotton candy, lemonade, ice cream, onion rings and more. There is a good selection of food, mentions customer Mark Dagostino. The festival also offers free parking to all customers.
Next year, Kurbaj wishes to see more people so that they can experience the fun of Ribfest. He believes it is an experience that everyone must go through.
The festival is taking place on 255 Centrum Blvd., Ottawa.
